Description

Home to Ida and Filip Andersson and their 3 children, a Swedish family related to the famed Baron Blixen, Kinondo Kwetu is often described as a ‘home away from home’ - a paradise for those wanting a more personal experience on the Kenyan coast. Located on a tranquil private beach on a 16-acre plot south of Diani Beach, distanced from residential neighbors by rocky cliffs and endless beach, Kinondo Kwetu is classified as a ‘Kaya’ area (protected by the National Museum) due to its surrounding holy forests and sacred land. With various forms of accommodation, all surrounded by green shady gardens and just a few steps from the white sandy beach, Kinondo Kwetu can cater for up to 43 people and is also able to facilitate exclusive use of the whole property or of selected parts. In addition to relaxing in the sun and swimming in the Indian Ocean, Kinondo Kwetu offers an impressive selection of exciting activities – ranging from water sports such as Kite Surfing, Deep sea fishing and Scuba Diving, to land activities such as Game Drives in the nearby Shimba Hills, Horse Riding and Yoga and more.

Activities

Horse riding - With their own stables and 3 horses, experienced & young riders can choose to explore the local holy forests or canter along the beach, giving less advanced riders a chance to practice their steps in one of Kinondo Kwetu’s riding paddocks.

Scuba diving – Kinondo Kwetu caters for all levels of scuba diving enthusiasts, from beginners taking their first PADI lesson to experienced divers who want to explore the reef. The reef is located so close to the coast, that incredible dives can be taken as near as 5 minutes away by boat! Best time for this is Sept – March when the winds are favorable.

Health and wellbeing - Exclusive yoga weeks, drawing masters from all over the world, are held at Kinondo Kwetu several times per year. As a completely holistic experience, not only does the exercise and ambiance give off a sense of health and wellbeing, but even the cuisine is suited to detox and revitalize the body. In addition, there are massages, beauty treatments, a wood-fired sauna, 2 swimming pools, a professional tennis course and a small exercise area.

Sacred Kaya Forest - Kaya Kinondo is the first Mijikenda sacred forest to open up for controlled ecotourism and the first such activity on the Kenyan Coast. Fantastic location on a quite part of the beach, lovely friendly staff who could not have been more helpful and great food. The villas are spacious and very well equipped and well laid out- we will definitely go back!

We spent the second half of our honeymoon at Kinondo, relaxing after our safari trip. It is an amazing place to escape to, the amenities are second to none (sauna, tennis court, 2 pools, a library full of paperbacks and board games) and the staff are super attentive without being overbearing. The food in particular is awesome - we'd never eaten so well (or so much!) - so special thanks to the chef and waiting staff. Vincent was our waiter most days/nights, and he was so charming and lovely, we felt very well cared for.

We came back to Kinondo Kwetu to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and had a wonderful time. The management had thoughtfully prepared a card and a little treat for us on arrival to celebrate the occasion. We stayed in Cottage 5 with a spectacular view of sunrise over the ocean from our bed and wonderful ocean breezes in a very comfortable and beautifully-decorated room. The resort looks as beautiful as ever, with a laid back luxury feel. All staff were very friendly and attentive but not at all overbearing. The COVID precautions felt very professional and responsible, but at the same time didn't ruin the experience. I highly recommend a visit to Kinondo Kwetu to families, couples or singles. There are a range of options for activities or for relaxing and you will feel pampered in just the right way. It's a unique place which manages to feel highly luxurious and casual at the same time.

Kinondo Kwetu gave me a great wake up to get strength for the Swedish autumn. Great service, great room and great food and wonderful staff.Lots of activity with yoga and PT and boat trips and swimming. Diving courses and if you have have children there are great babysitters to help you. They can also arrange safaris if you want to leave Kinondo Kwetu for a day or more to watch animals where the love to be.

I was traveling alone and booked just a long weekend at the coast to be away from Nairobi. I had heard before of Kinondo Kwetu and was anxious to visit it myself. The positive reviews aren’t exaggerated. The lodge itself is a very relaxing place and very spacious. The food is wonderful for as well lunch as dinner. They really must have a wonderful chef who is also very creative.

The only minus according to me are the prices which are charged for the various activities/ excursions. The beach itself is not as sandy as Diani and the coral makes it a bit hard to enter the ocean. For this reason they created a long cemented path into the ocean to give you easier access to the ocean.
